How do you start retinol? An 8-week schedule

Updated

Start retinol slowly and build up. Use a pea-sized amount [4] on clean, dry skin [8] at night, follow with moisturizer, and wear sunscreen by day [1]. Corneo’s 8-week start is 2 nights a week for about 4 weeks, then 3 nights for about 4 weeks, then 4 nights as maintenance. You step up only when those nights were done and your skin is settled.

Why a slow start

Retinoids often cause a reaction early on. It can include itching, burning, redness and peeling [3]. It usually appears within the first few weeks [3]. The standard fix is to use the product less often or switch to a gentler retinoid [3].

That is why the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) suggests starting every other night and slowly building up, with the least intense formula you can find [1]. RoC’s chief dermatologist suggests starting 2 to 3 times a week and increasing gradually [9]. Corneo starts at 2 nights a week, below every other night and at the low end of that range.

Retinol is a gentler starting point than prescription tretinoin. It is considerably less irritating [3]. It also has to be converted in the skin to retinoic acid before it acts [3].

This is Corneo’s pacing, not a prescription.

The weeks are approximate. The calendar is not the gate. What matters is that you actually used retinol on those nights and your skin stayed calm. Missed nights do not count toward the next step.

What a retinol night looks like

  1. Wash with a gentle cleanser and let your skin dry. Retinol goes on clean, dry skin [8].
  2. Apply a pea-sized amount [4].
  3. Follow with moisturizer. The AAD suggests pairing a retinoid with moisturizer to reduce the chance of irritation [1]. Step-up studies of retinol have paired it with moisturizer too [5].
  4. In the morning, use sunscreen and other sun protection. Retinoids increase sun sensitivity [1].

On the other nights, keep things simple. The AAD advises starting one product at a time, because several new products at once can irritate your skin [2].

What to expect in the first weeks

Some dryness or flaking early on is common. In a 12-week study of a 0.5% retinol product used with a vitamin C moisturizer, dryness rose at weeks 4 and 8 and did not persist to week 12 [7]. In a 10-week study of a 0.5% retinol product with niacinamide, mild flaking and redness appeared early. By week 10, participants reported no stinging, itching, dryness or tingling [6].

Results take patience. The AAD says most skin care products take at least six weeks to work, and sometimes up to three months [2]. It also warns that people often stop a product once they see results, which stops the benefits [2].

When to step down

Pay attention to how your skin feels, not just how it looks.

  • Stinging, burning or tingling. The AAD says to stop a product that stings, burns or tingles, because it is irritating your skin [2]. Corneo offers to step you down a level.
  • Peeling. Corneo asks whether to step back down a level. Using a retinoid less often is the standard first move for irritation [3].
  • Using more than directed. The AAD notes that using more product than directed can cause excess dryness and other problems [2].

If you use a prescription retinoid such as tretinoin: Follow your prescriber’s instructions. Corneo schedules the rest.

What Corneo does

Corneo paces retinol on this schedule, steps you up only after the nights were done and your skin is settled, and offers to step you down on stinging or peeling. It also checks the rest of your shelf and holds back anything that conflicts with retinol, with a reason. An audit of your shelf shows your schedule.

FAQ

Can I skip straight to every night?

The AAD suggests every other night to start, building up slowly [1]. The early retinoid reaction is common in the first few weeks [3]. Corneo’s schedule tops out at 4 nights a week for maintenance.

What if I miss a retinol night?

Nothing breaks. In Corneo, a missed night simply does not count toward the next step. You stay at your current level until the nights are done and your skin is settled.

Should I use a stronger retinol to see results faster?

The AAD suggests the least intense formula you can find at the start [1]. One 12-week study stepped retinol strength up gradually, from 0.25% to 0.5% to 1.0%, alongside a moisturizer [5]. Most products still take at least six weeks to show results [2].
